NETWORKING: Where is the Silver Lining? - opportunities from cloud computing

9 March, 2010 - 18:00 - 9 March, 2010 - 21:00
BEN feature

Cloud computing is the internet based development and use of computer technology, and it is changing the landscape of business and personal IT.

Users can access software applications and services over the internet, often through their web browser.  This allows them to work from any computer and location, simplifying the challenges of software installation, maintenance and support, and reducing capital expenditure.

Cloud computing can let give even small businesses cost-effectively and flexibly set up and run sophisticated IT systems.

It also offers an exciting new delivery channel and business model for software development companies.

This BEN event will examine the current state of cloud computing and look at where it may lead.  Experts and business users will present their views and experiences, and we will examine the potential of for virtual working and the evolution of the workplace.

A light buffet meal, soft drinks and wine will be available free of charge.

Following up on last night's Cloud Computing event I thought people may be interested to read about Google's announcement [1], only hours after the evening drew to a close, that they were launching Google Apps Store, which is their Cloud Computing equivalent to the Android Marketplace or Apple's App Store.

The Google Apps store gives developers a platform to create compelling new applications for a trusted platform. End-Users will benefit from a new breed of powerful applications that are able to leverage an organisation's data (provided it's stored in Google's 'cloud'). So, for example, user's can grant a new CRM application access to their calendar or email data.

Comment posted by Jenny Pearcy, on behalf of BEN member, Mark Thompson: My thanks to BEN for putting on last night's event. The speakers were excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It is a bit of a way out for me to get to UWE but last night was definitely worthwhile. Many thanks to all involved!
